New friends around the dinner table.
Visiting the white horses of the Camargue.
Dear Madeleine, Warmest greetings to you and Erick from Seattle. Thank you both so very much for a time in Arles that I will
always treasure. Special thanks for my French classes with Christine -- she was superb. And, what joy it was to become immersed in the cuisine and wine of Provence.
My life has been enriched.
Erick & Madeleine, I just wanted to drop you a note, thanking you for taking part in making my trip to Provence the best vacation I've ever had. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute
and can't imagine a holiday without a cooking class again.... Thanks again. I really enjoyed the cooking classes, and I do hope Jean-Marie (the baker)'s business didn't go down too much the
week I helped shape the croissants!

French Language Intensive
TWO WEEK FRENCH INTENSIVE : Language Study and Cooking classes.
March 30 - April 12, or June 8 - 21, 2008
Price: US$3400 (2350E) with accommodations (maximum 10); US$2660 (1835E) without accommodations (an additional 4)
Come join us for two weeks as a resident of the ancient Provence city of Arles,
and enjoy 30 hours of intensive French instruction. Alongside the French instruction will be
cooking classes, wine tastings, tours of the city and the region, and much more.
Arles is located on the edge of the Rhône River, just 45 kilometers from the seaside towns
of Saintes Maries de la Mer and Aigues Mortes. WeĠre a short 20 minute train ride to Avignon,
and an hour from Marseille.
During your time with us, we will include either dinner or lunch each day (demi-pension),
inviting our
friends the archeologists, the wine-makers, the bee-keeper, the baker, and many more to
join us at the table to stimulate your ears and put your new-found language skills to
immediate use. There's nothing like a leisurely meal well lubricated with local wines for loosening
up your tongue and getting you to speak (and perhaps debate) like a native.
We will guide you through the history of Arles, and share some of its extraordinary
richness with you. But weĠll also give you free time to roam and explore
the region yourself (or with a new-found friend).
- 13 nights' accommodations (spacious doubles) and 13 breakfasts
- 30 hours of French instruction at an intermediate or beginners' level (classes will have an average
of 4-6 students)
- lunch or dinner every day
- 4 cooking classes
- wine tasting at a local winery (whose wine maker will then come join us for dinner to continue
your conversation)
- a free pass to all the Arles' monuments
- a guided visit through the museum of Arles' Antiquity with an historian to learn the depths of the
over 2500 years of history of this city and region.
- an outing to the wild beaches and marshlands of the Camargue by horseback or jeep (as you prefer)
Extra optional activities will include outings to St. Rémy de Provence, the Roman Aqueduct "Pont du Gard",
to an olive oil mill, to visit an organic goat cheese maker, hiking by the sea coast, in the hills or amidst the wineries.
Dates for 2008:
March 30 - April 12
June 8 - 21
